REASON FOR LOSS:


Started at 08.40 hrs. escorting bombers to London. There were a large number of aircraft on this operation. Before reaching the objective, this pilot got separated from the rest over Biggin Hill at 26,000 ft. He was attacked by ten Spitfires which attacked from both sides which he successfully avoided but was shot by an aircraft from behind, which hit the radiator and many hits were heard against the armour plate. Pilot made a good belly landing. Four .303 strikes underneath fuselage, behind armour, two in port wing; radiator hit.

Markings: 7+ but an old marking of 3+ was just decipherable. Cowling and tip of rudder yellow, spinner green with white flash and red tip. Airframe made by Erla, acceptance date 27/6/40. Four Victory Stripes on the tail which were for one Curtis in France, two Spitfires over England and one Blenheim over France. Engine: DB 601. Armament: two 20 mm shell guns and two MG 17; guns not appearing to have been fired. This pilot was with the M.O. when the flight started and was told not to fly, nevertheless he ran out to his aircraft and went up.
